Science Ninja Team Gatchaman arrived in 1972 from Tatsunoko Production and set the template for the bird-themed hero team. Five young operatives in winged capes, a shared transforming ship, a masked villain in Berg Katse: the formula travelled far enough that western audiences met a reworked version of it as Battle of the Planets.
